Proteins are the building blocks of the body
Protein is needed to build everything from cells and enzymes to hormones. It also plays a key role in the immune system. In other words, the nutrient is important for the function of the whole body. In protein, there can be up to 20 different amino acids, of which 9 are essential. This means that we need to acquire them through the diet, as the body does not produce them itself. Many people who want to build muscle usually think a lot about their protein intake, as muscles mainly consist of protein. Protein is also filling and is therefore a good idea to have in snacks.
Whey protein
Whey protein is extracted from cow's milk. Whey makes up about 20% of the milk's total protein content and is separated from other substances in cheese making. The remaining fat is then removed to obtain the whey protein. Whey protein is a popular protein supplement as it has a broad amino acid profile.
What does it mean if a whey protein is EU organic?
In organic food production, you take into account biodiversity, the conservation of natural resources, environmental practices and strict animal welfare (1). In order for a product to be labeled as EU-organic, the label used within the EU, a product must meet strict conditions that apply to the entire production chain. The product must contain at least 95% organic ingredients, and in addition, the other 5% must meet other strict conditions (1).
When it comes to products that come from animals (for example whey protein), there are requirements for how the animals should be handled. The feed that the animals eat must be organic and for the most part be grown on the farm. The animals must be allowed to be outdoors and have an outlet for their natural behaviours (2).
In organic crop production, it is important to promote soil fertility, that you can have perennial crop rotation and that you can have a cycle of organic material. Therefore, fertilizers, soil improvers and plant protection products should only be used if they comply with the principles and objectives of organic production. In general, the EU requires that an organic food must be produced without synthetically produced chemical pesticides and without artificial fertilizers. In organic production, genetic engineering is also prohibited. In addition, production should primarily rely on renewable resources (3).
