What is betaine HCI?
Betaine hydrochloride (Betaine HCI) is a composition of the amino acid betaine and hydrochloride, a salt of hydrochloric acid that makes the stomach acidic. Betaine hydrochloride helps in the production of hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice. Betaine HCI from Healthwell is also fortified with proteas, an oxygen-adapted enzyme (pH 2.5–3.5) that helps in the digestion of protein in the stomach. One capsule contains 60 mg of proteas, which digests 128 grams of coagulated protein from egg white.
Good digestion is important for gut health and our general wellbeing. Stomach problems can show up in different ways and difficulties with digestion are common, including abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, or gas after large and heavy meals. Proper digestion is also important for us to be able to absorb the nutrition from the food we eat. When digestion doesn't work properly, it may be due to deficient enzymes that break down the food or low levels of hydrochloric acid (gastric acid). Healthwell Betaine HCI is therefore recommended in conjunction with the main meal of the day.
Why is gastric acid important?
Gastric acid should be very acidic and is important for us to be able to properly break down the food we eat. Gastric acid also helps activate the enzyme pepsin that helps break down the proteins from our food. In addition, gastric acid acts as an inhibitor for bacteria that may be present in the food. Age, stress, and an unbalanced diet are factors that all affect the hydrochloric acid balance in the stomach.
Good to know: Betaine is also known as trimethylglycine.
