What is L-theanine?
L-theanine (gamma-glutamylethylamide) is a non-protein-forming amino acid that occurs naturally in the leaves of the tea bush. One cup of tea usually contains 25-60 mg of theanine. Although theanine does not form proteins, the amino acid has other functions in the body. It is popular to take in connection with sleep or to get a calming feeling. Theanine most often occurs as so-called L-isomers, and is therefore often described as L-theanine.
What does L-theanine do in the body?
L-theanine is often noted in connection with the release of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine in the brain, the so-called "feel good" hormones. Higher levels of serotonin make us calmer, and dopamine in turn affects the brain's reward system. Studies suggest that L-theanine may be beneficial in dealing with stress-related disorders (1). The amino acid has also been noted in connection with improved sleep quality (2). To get the best effect, you should take L-theanine just before you go to bed.
