What do L-theanine and GABA do in the body?
L-theanine and GABA have a similar chemical structure and therefore function in a similar way in the body. L-theanine is an amino acid found mainly in green tea, where it contributes to the unique taste. Unlike other amino acids, L-theanine does not build protein, but has other functions in the body. It plays a role in the release of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, hormones that make us feel calm and contented (1). GABA, in turn, is found naturally in the body where it acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. Signal substances have the task of sending information from one cell to another, and since GABA is an inhibitory substance, it dampens the signals and makes the activity calmer. Thanks to the properties attributed to the substances, many people appreciate L-theanine and GABA when they want to get wind down and prepare for a good night's sleep.
How do L-theanine and GABA work together?
Both GABA and L-theanine are popular dietary supplements separately, but studies show that they can be particularly beneficial taken together. A study (2) examined, for example, how an intake of L-theanine and GABA can affect sleep. The results showed a positive effect on both sleep time, sleep quality and length of sleep. The effect was also greater when the substances were taken together than when they were taken separately.
Do L-theanine and GABA have any side effects?
Neither L-theanine nor GABA has any proven side effects at the normal dose. At a very high dose, GABA can cause side effects such as increased heart rate and respiration. Avoid any side effects by following the recommendation on the package.
