What is turmeric?
Turmeric is originally from Asia, where it has been a valued herb in traditional Ayurvedic cooking for centuries. In large parts of Asia, and especially in India, turmeric is a highly popular ingredient in cooking. Turmeric is an important component of curry, giving the spice its characteristic yellow colour. Turmeric comes from the same plant family as ginger and it is the root of the turmeric that is ground to the characteristic colourful powder that we're used to seeing. Fresh turmeric is intensely orange and quite discolouring.
The active ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin, which is what gives turmeric its powerful yellow-orange colour. Turmeric belongs to the same plant family as ginger but is slightly milder in taste.
